Lake District Events, June 2019


With the weather improving and with lovely, long days to take advantage of, the Lake District is more alive than ever with lots of events to choose from! Here are just some of the best upcoming events in June 2019.

Country Fest, Kendal, 1st - 2nd June

Dogs at country show in the Lake DistrictOrganised by the Westmorland County Agricultural Society, Country Fest in Kendal celebrates everything about the countryside. From cooking demonstrations to daring stunt performances, traditional summer sports to craft & vintage marquees, and maypole dancing to animals galore, there's a wide range of activities to choose from. Complement that with live music throughout the weekend and delicious local food and you've got yourself a great weekend out!

Country Fest takes place at Westmorland County Showground in Crooklands.

Build a Pizza Oven, Greystoke, 1st June

Greystoke is home to the wonderful Quirky Workshops. Holding an unusual array of activities throughout the year, you can learn all sorts of new skills ranging from the basic to the bizarre! One of our favourites in June is the full-day workshop where you can learn to build your own pizza oven! After working with a group to build the oven, you'll get to sample your creation by baking pizza and bread at the end of the day!

The Chef Show, Threlkeld, 5th June

Touring around the Lake District, The Chef Show is part-play, part cookery demonstration (including tasters)! Taking the audience behind the scenes of a Saturday night at a local curry house, this unique show is based on real stories. Both hilarious and thought-provoking, it's a night out that The Yorkshire Post called "A stroke of genius".

Great North Swim, Windermere, 7th - 9th June

Great North Swim in Lake WindermereHosted at the fabulous Brockhole on Lake Windermere, open water swimmers flock to the Great North Swim every year to try out their skills on England's longest lake. There are lengths to suit everyone, from a family-friendly 250 metres all the way up to a challenging 10 kilometres! If you're not one for the water but would like to visit, Brockhole itself has a huge range of activities with adventure playgrounds, soft play, and arts and crafts to explore.

'Best of British' Gala Concert, Kirkby Lonsdale, 8th June

Celebrating 500 years of British song, local choirs, bands and guest soloists will come together for this musical night out. With songs from The Beatles, Elton John and Coldplay; secular and religious music from the Renaissance; and beautiful folk songs, there is something to enjoy, whatever your taste! Set in cabaret style at St Mary's Church in Kirkby Lonsdale, this will be a wonderfully relaxing night for every music lover!

Ulverston Music Festival, Ulverston, 10th - 11th June

St Mary's Church in Kirkby LonsdaleJune is the month of music! The popular Ulverston Music Festival celebrates music from a range of genres and is a fantastic weekend of top-quality entertainment. This year sees visitors from the Royal Northern Sinfonia, a Jazz Night, a showing of the film The Pianist, a Tango quintet, and a family concert: Travelling by Tuba, amongst many others!

Light the Lakes, Various Locations, 21st - 23rd June

Suset over Hardknott in the Lake DistrictSet up in 2012 to raise money for the orphaned children of Detective Constable Heather Cooper, Light the Lakes now continues to raise money annually for the Care of Police Survivors charity. It's an awe-inspiring sight to see the peaks of the Lake District light up as thousands of people climb the fells during this event, lighting their blue flames at the allocated time.

If you want to take part, you can book a peak for your group - but hurry, at the time of writing, there are only a few unclaimed mountains left! Otherwise, you could just settle in for the evening with a glass of wine or a beer, and wait for this spectacular sight to reveal itself.

Where is Peter Rabbit?, Bowness-on-Windermere, from 22nd June

The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-WindermereGet to know the beloved characters of Beatrix Potter in a new light with this theatrical spectacular! Performed at The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere, this show will delight Beatrix Potter fans both young and young at heart! With voiceovers from Miriam Margoyles and Griff Rhys Jones, you will be transported to a magical world of beautiful music, Lake District settings, and much-loved characters!

Barrow BID Super Soapbox Challenge, Barrow, 29th June

Barrow Super Soapbox Challenge carBarrow-in-Furness is well-known for its engineering excellence, so it's fitting that it has its own soapbox racing event! Whether you want to enter your own vehicle or just go along and enjoy the event, this promises to be an energetic and fun day out! Races start at 10am and continue throughout the day. The event raises money for local charities and there will also be a guest appearance by no other than Eddie the Eagle!

You can reach Barrow by train or car from our cottages in the South West Lake District.

Ullswater Country Fair, Patterdale, 30th June

Tractor at country fairThis traditional country fair is found in the stunning landscape around Ullswater. Take your pick from traditional fair stands, falconry displays, children's sports, dry stone walling demonstrations, fell racing, dog shows, and much more! There's truly something for all the family whether you're a regular country show attendee or are looking to try something completely new!

Badger Hide, Haweswater, various dates

Badger in woodlandIf you've ever wanted to get up close and personal with these black and white critters, then the RSPB at Haweswater has a treat just for you! Throughout June and until October, you can spend an hour and a half at sunset in a badger hide observing these nighttime creatures. On top of that, an accompanying RSPB Badger Guide will give you lots of information on the individuals that you are seeing!

Join others with the same interest or book the hide for your own private use - the choice is yours! Please book ahead to claim your spot.
