La'al Ratty Steam Railway

Published:

Although the summer holidays are drawing to a close, there are still some great family days out to be had whilst staying at our self catering Lake District cottages.

The La'al Ratty steam railway is especially popular with all ages and easily reached from many of our Eskdale and Ravenglass cottages.

There is a wealth of wildlife to be seen along the route including red squirrels, Herdwick sheep and delightful Oystercatchers. Pick up the handy leaflet before you board, which has handy pointers for the best places for taking photos and spotting the wildlife.

Keen walkers and Wainwright fans will love the guide, Walks from Ratty, which was put together by Wainwright in the style of his Pictorial Guides. There are ten walks to choose from, all meticulously researched and illustrated and none too difficult.

Ravenglass is a pretty coastal village. Here you can discover the estuary with its wealth of bird life, indulge in some shopping or visit one of the delightful cafes. Ravenglass also has some interesting Roman history – link this with a visit to the fort at Hard Knott at the other end of the line.
