Girl jumping into a lake

There are so many free or low-cost things to do in the Lake District, and the Brockhole Visitor Centre offers all weather play areas, gardens and grounds to explore, mini golf, an adventure playground and more! There’s a treetop trek and nets for those feeling brave! Have a look at our cottages near here.

Tarn Hows in the Lake District

Head out on a nice easy walk with the children. One of our favorite walks to do with children in the Lake District is the route around Tarn Hows – a circular trip around the lake, which is 1.8 miles in total. This is a beautiful route, which is suitable for buggies and kids. To get to this walk, drive along the B5286 from Ambleside to Hawkshead, turn right up Hawkshead Hill and follow signs for Tarn Hows. Park in the main car park and follow the track down to the tarn.

Tarn Hows is a man-made spot – during the Victorian era, a beck was dammed, and created the tarns we see today! The scenery here is magical and there are plenty of benches dotted along the trail to relax and take a breather. The Coniston hills and Langdale Pikes form the perfect backdrop to this wonderful part of the Lakes.

Tapir at the Lake District Wildlife Park in Bassenthwaite

The Lake District Wildlife Park in Bassenthwaite is a fantastic day out with the kids. There are hundreds of animals from rare Tapirs to Lemurs, Meercats and even Red Pandas. There are daily Bird of Prey flying displays and why not spend the day as a zookeeper! Most of the action is under cover so it’s a perfect day out on a rainy day in Cumbria.

Tullie House Museum in Carlisle

Tullie House is the perfect all weather activity! This museum is the home of the Romans! Take a journey back in time and discover all the stories behind Hadrian’s Wall and the mighty Roman Empire. There’s an art gallery, café, gift shop with locally made gifts and a beautiful garden to roam too. The kids will love the interactive exhibitions and can even play dress up in some of the rooms.
