If you’re heading to the Lake District and looking for a nice, easy walk suitable for all ages and abilities, this walk up Latrigg is the perfect one for you! I’ve followed this route countless times with my three kids and my grandparents too and everyone thoroughly enjoys it. The entire route covers 1.5 miles and takes roughly 1 hour. You’ll climb 120 metres and I promise the views over Keswick and Skiddaw from the top of Latrigg are outstanding and worth every step.
So, here’s the route…
If you’re based in Keswick drive to the hamlet of Applethwaite (1 mile away from Keswick) and park at the top of Applethwaite Lane in the roadside car park. From the car park, walk through a few stile gates and you’ll see the path that takes you all the way up to Latrigg. The trail is clearly marked and you simply follow it round the high circular of west facing Latrigg to reach the south facing viewpoint.
We always take a picnic with us and tuck into our tasty treats when we reach the summit. Take a while to enjoy the magical views over the Skiddaw range and Derwentwater before retracing the route back to the starting point. Or, if you fancy a little bit more, you can follow the track North East to a wood and then North West back to the car park in Applethwaite.
This is a short and easy walk with amazing scenery all along the way. There’s also an easy access path, which leads all the way to the top of Latrigg and is ideal for wheelchair users or if you have kids in buggies.
After your walk, you can head back to Keswick and enjoy a well deserved piece of cake and cuppa at one of the many coffee shops – Square Orange do a lovely choice of homemade sweet treats!
