‘Tis once again the season to be jolly and across the Lake District and Cumbria, towns and villages are gearing up for fabulous Christmas light switch-ons! Read on for the top days and evenings on offer!
Ambleside, 16th Nov
Ambleside’s Christmas light switch-on is a full-day event starting at 10am in the morning with the Grand Christmas Fair and a children’s fun zone. The famous Windermere Steamers will be heading out at set times during the day to find Santa and, although these are sold out, you can enjoy the entertainment in town until they return with Santa on board! He’ll also be heading into the centre of town on his sleigh at 4pm. A lantern procession takes place at 4.30pm followed by a spectacular firework display at 5.30pm in Rothay Park.

Cockermouth, 17th Nov
From 2pm to 6pm on Sunday the 17th of November, Cockermouth with be full of revelry in anticipation of the Christmas light switch-on at 5pm. The day kicks off at 2pm with a performance by a local theatre group and entertainers throughout the day include Cockermouth Mechanics Band, Mandy’s Dancing Divas, and local singer Luke Mattear. There will also be a fun fair, giant snow globe, Christmas stalls and mulled wine. The kids will also love the Children’s Christmas Window Spotting Competition.

Carlisle, 17th Nov
Popular UK pop group East 17, alongside boy band singer and Glee star Max George, will be the headline acts at this year’s Christmas light switch-on in Carlisle. The entertainment continues throughout the evening with performances from local dance groups, school choirs and other local performers.
The switch-on will take place outside the Old Town Hall in the pedestrianised area of the city centre at 5pm. The event runs from 3.30pm and is hosted by Britain’s Got Talent comedian Barbara Nice.

Whitehaven, 18th Nov
Running from 10am to 8pm on the 18th of November, Whitehaven’s Christmas light switch-on promises something for everyone with an Ed Sheeran tribute act, a visit from Peppa Pig and her brother, George, 30 festive market stalls, and performances from local music groups. The lights will be switched on at 6pm from the CFM stage on Lowther Street.

Keswick, 22nd Nov
Keswick always puts on a great show, with the whole community getting involved. The town’s firemen will be switching on the light at 7pm, with the local Committed to Rock choir providing entertainment from 6pm. Throughout the day you can also enjoy the lighting up of the Christmas tree in Packhorse Court, music from the school choir and jazz band, and a fabulous gift and food fayre in Market Square. There will even be a special appearance from Peter Rabbit himself!

Ulverston, 23rd – 24th Nov
The Christmas light switch-on in Ulverston is part of the popular Dickensian Festival. Set in the pretty cobbled streets of the town, there are huge amounts of free entertainment and live music, as well as the quintessential Christmas market. You can really get into the spirit of things by dressing up in Victorian costume (there are competitions for the best outfits!) or enjoying a go on the traditional fairground rides. The light switch-on will take place on Saturday the 23rd at 4pm.

Workington, 30th Nov
Workington Christmas Festival is a full-day event packed to the brim with entertainment and things to do! From 11am there will be street entertainment, festive stalls and live music throughout the centre of town. Enjoy a fun fair, puppet and magic shows, the Cockermouth Ukulele Band, Workington Town Band, imagination parties, and much, much more! The entertainment will culminate with the Christmas light switch-on at 5pm.

Windermere, 30th Nov
Windermere Winter Lights switch-on is a real community event. Sponsored in part by the town council, the event is organised by local volunteers who also fundraise and request sponsorship from local businesses. Santa leads a procession from Windermere train station at 4.45pm, making three stops through the town. There will be food and drink along the way with a fireworks display to finish off the celebrations at around 6.30pm.

Hawkshead, 30th Nov - 1st Dec
Hawkshead is a pretty, traffic-free village between the lakes of Coniston and Windermere. Its narrow cobbled streets and quirky buildings make it the perfect place for a real Christmassy celebration and this weekend will be full of festive cheer! Running from 10am 8pm on the Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, there is plenty to pack in including children’s rides, a seasonal market, street entertainment, carol singing and a winter beer festival in all the pubs! A lantern procession starts at 5pm on the Saturday with Father Christmas and the Bay Beat Band using “magic dust” to turn on the lights throughout the village.
