The lakes, the rivers and even the sea! There are plenty of opportunities for getting out onto the water while you’re in the Lake District and, fortunately, we have lots of fabulous self-catering cottages close to boating and watersports facilities!

Boats on Coniston Water in the Lake DistrictWhether you’re bringing your own boat, plan to hire one and “paddle your own canoe”, or will be heading onto the waves with an outdoor guide, make sure you’re as close as possible at one of these wonderful cottages.

Note: you may need licenses on certain lakes or rivers. If you’re hiring a boat, this should be arranged on your behalf, but please check requirements if you are launching your own.

Spread across three floors, The Crow’s Nest in Bowness is a wonderfully modern holiday home with all your comforts taken care of. Admire the view from the balcony or enjoy a long lie-in in the comfy beds!

Bowness Bay Marina hires out a selection of motorboats ranging from standard to ‘premium plus’. They can also offer sales and servicing. Alternatively, Ferry Nab has lots of boat services including a slipway, tractor, hoist, showers, storage and berthing.

Cosily tucked away in the eaves of one of Keswick’s iconic townhouses, 30a Lake Road is a self-catering apartment just a short walk from Derwentwater. Bright and welcoming, you can enjoy lovely views of Skiddaw and are conveniently located in the heart of the town.

Keswick Boat Landings are home to the Keswick Launch Co. and you can hope on one of their boats to take a cruise over the water. You can also hire rowboats or motorboats.

Birchfield is a spacious bungalow on the edge of the popular village of Portinscale. It’s surrounded by a large garden and has excellent views towards the fells. There’s a garage for storing boats or paddleboards if you need it, and Derwentwater is just a short drive away (or a walk if you don’t have heavy equipment to carry!).

Derwentwater Marina offers hire, lessons, berthing, shore storage, and even used boats for sale.

The Beech Tree offers impressive group self-catering accommodation in the centre of Coniston village. Dating back to the 17th century, it has multiple en suite bedrooms, a games room, large garden and plenty of space for parking.

Coniston Boating Centre has all sorts of vessels for hire, including kayaks, motorboats and paddleboards. You can also take advantage of storage, launching, and the on-site Bluebird Café, named after Donald Campbell’s famous boat.

As the Lake District’s second longest lake, Ullswater has plenty to offer water enthusiasts. 2 Low Glenridding is just a short hop from the lake, as well as on a popular route up Helvellyn. It’s ideal if you’re a true outdoor enthusiast!

There are a couple of places with boating facilities in Glenridding, so you can pick the one that suits you best. Glenridding Sailing Centre runs taster sessions, multi-day courses, kids boating, group activities, hire and launching. St Patrick’s Boat Landing has mooring services, a tearoom, and boat hire that includes fishing boats and canoes.

Wilwyn, Ambleside

Tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac in the bustling town of Ambleside, Wilwyn is a cosy retreat with a wood burner, private parking and original features. All the attractions of the town are on your doorstep, including Windermere lake and its water facilities.

Waterhead Pier is a stopping point for Windermere Lake Cruises, which runs numerous public tours of the lake. Alternatively, you can hire a cruiser privately or book a self-drive motorboat.

At the other end of Ullswater is Pooley Bridge and Lamb Corner House, a luxury self-catering bungalow surrounded by sheep-studded fields. It also has an excellent decking area where you can make the most of the tranquil surroundings.

Lakeland Boat Hire is family-run and just a short, pleasant walk from Pooley Bridge. Here you can hire motorboats (including luxury options), rowing boats and Canadian canoes.

Riggs Cottage is jam-packed full of character with a whitewashed exterior, exposed stone walls, and giant cruck beams. In a small hamlet close to Bassenthwaite Lake, its tranquil surroundings, pretty garden, and delightful nooks and crannies are bound to charm.

Peel Wyke is a hidden car park and slipway into Bassenthwaite Lake. Though these are the only facilities, it’s a handy and sheltered spot to launch your boat (manpowered only) on the peaceful waters, which sit beneath Skiddaw and are part of a nature reserve.

Come to Newlands Cottage for the views! Overlooking the stunning and tranquil Newlands Valley, you’ll be blown away by the scenery here. The cottage itself makes the most of its location with large windows and external glass doors that let in all the light alongside those lovely sights.

Nichol End Marine provides kayak, paddleboard and canoe hire on the western shores of Derwentwater. There are also rowing and sailing boats for hire, as well as convenient changing facilities on site. Nichol End Café is a great place to visit after your day out, with its homemade cakes and fresh coffee.
