Cockermouth Georgian Fair Weekend – Friday 4th to Sunday 6th May
Since 2005 Cockermouth has hosted an annual Georgian Fair highlighting its roots from that era. The Georgian gem town is very accessible from the North and West Lake District and has plenty to offer visitors. The wide main street and market place is packed full of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Cockermouth is particularly known for its numerous curio and antique shops.
To celebrate the town’s Georgian past, a period market is held on the main street with plenty of entertainment. On the Memorial Gardens can find old style fairground attractions and sedan chair racing(!). Set alongside the river, here you can enjoy well maintained paths along the Cocker leading to the ruined castle.
Over the weekend you will find a period craft and farmers market held in the main streets – lots of the stall holders will be in costume and selling wares of that period. The weekend is spent celebrating Cockermouth’s heritage and includes concerts, music and dancing and Cumberland wrestling displays.
A park and ride scheme is in operation over the weekend, ideal if you are staying in any of our Lake District Cottages outside of Cockermouth. It is a lovely town to explore on foot and seek out the fascinating narrow streets and nooks and crannies.
