You can take on the mighty Scafells from the head of the valley, wander up Muncaster Fell from the door or enjoy gentle potters along the crystal clear River Esk and around the Japanese Gardens. Why not try a chilly wild swim in one of the Esk's wonderful deep pools? The valley has five excellent pubs in which to reward yourself after your outdoor adventures.

Only slightly further off there is a great choice of things to do. Explore the Roman history of the area at the mountainside Hardknott Roman Fort or at lovely Ravenglass on the coast. Muncaster Castle makes a great day out for all ages with its spooky history, gorgeous gardens, adventure playground and bird of prey displays. If you've come armed with golf clubs then Eskdale has a delightful parkland course while Seascale, 8 miles away, boasts a renowned links to challenge you. So whether you'd like to challenge yourself in Cumbria's fells or just gather your family and relax in a warm and welcoming cottage then this cottage makes the ideal destination.

With ample socialising space, glorious views and a wonderful tiered garden, this cottage has a gracious and welcoming feel about it from the moment you arrive.

On arrival at the house, guests are greeted by a tiled hallway with plenty of space for coats and shoes. To the left of the hallway is the living room. It's a well proportioned space with light decor and local art. There are two deep comfy sofas and two armchairs arranged around the open fire for which coal is provided. For entertainment there is TV with Freesat and a charming window seat with views out onto Muncaster Fell, Birker and Ulpha Fell beyond. Why not take a seat and enjoy the view of the fells and rolling farmland outside? The new sun room is a warm and comfortable haven for watching the world go by over your morning coffee. You might even catch sight of the La’al Ratty steam engine!

Across the hall to the kitchen/diner which has a traditional stone flagged floor, a comfy armchair and a gorgeous wood burner making for cosy evenings around the wooden dining set planning your Lakeland adventures. The owners have thoughtfully provided a selection of toys, books and games for you to enjoy during your stay. The modern kitchen has light units and granite worktops, a double fan oven with ceramic hobs, a built-in fridge and slimline dishwasher. A refitted utility room just off the kitchen houses a microwave and fridge/freezer while also having plenty of space for wet coats and muddy boots, it makes an ideal place for visiting pooches to call their own too. There is a washing machine in the outhouse as well as an extra WC for your convenience.

A staircase from the main hallway leads to the bedrooms and bathroom. Halfway up the stairs there is a door to the rear of the property as well as the handsome Victorian-style bathroom. This indulgent room has a deep freestanding slipper bath with handheld shower, a separate shower enclosure with mixer shower, WC and wash basin. An ideal room to relax and soak away tired muscles from your fell walks.

On the first floor are the three delightful bedrooms which all share light fresh decor and enjoy lovely views of Eskdale. There is one king-size, one double and one twin room. All three bedrooms have a chest of drawers for storage and cast iron decorative fireplaces. Off the master bedroom is a second, private sun room, which overlooks the fells, the railway line in the distance, and the lovely garden at Birk How. This leads to the master en-suite, with WC, basin and large shower enclosure.

Outside the tiered garden is a delight with glorious views of the surrounding countryside and the La'al Ratty Steam Railway which passes nearby. The terrace has mature shrubs and there is a patio, seating area and a sloping lawn. Why not make use of the outdoor dining furniture for sunny morning breakfasts or evening drinks? We had a wonderful time at Birk How exploring the local walks and lakes. The house was extremely well equipped. We were there in glorious sunshine but it would work equally well for a cold week with the fire lit.
