  • Ideally situated for walks from the front door - whether you prefer a flat lake loop, or a higher altitude fell hike
  • With superb mountain views from the large garden - a haven for birds and wildlife which overlooks a site of Special Scientific Interest
Property code: SZ071

With Derwentwater immediately to the south and Bassenthwaite Lake to the north, this stylish and welcoming bungalow offers tranquil accommodation for a family exploring the north of the Lake District.

Enjoying a wonderful position on the edge of the highly sought after village of Portinscale, this property offers spacious accommodation for four to six people and a lucky dog. Step inside this refurbished bungalow and you'll instantly feel at home. There's a spacious dining kitchen, just perfect for enjoying home-cooked meals, a lovely living room and bright sun room. There are two bedrooms, one a double and one a twin, as well as a fantastic modern family shower room. The property is a rarity, as equally spacious outside as in! A fantastic garden, with lawn areas, patio and plentiful gravelled parking, wraps around the house. Edged with daffodils in the spring, a haven for birds and wildlife, and even views towards Derwentwater, this really is a special place.

The charming village of Portinscale is sure to delight. With a convivial village pub a 5-minute walk away and a fantastic cafe just over the road from the property, you're perfectly placed for indulging in a hearty meal or slice of delicious cake. The views from the cottage are sure to inspire and walkers will delight at what's on offer straight from the front door. Head up Catbells for a fantastic birds eye view of Derwentwater. 10 minutes from the property, the walk takes you along the lakeshore, through woods where Beatrix Potter set some of her best loved books - rabbits often visit the bungalow's garden in the early morning too. There are plenty of well-positioned benches to make the most of the wonderful views.

Why not leave the car and walk into Keswick less than 30 miunutes away? Spend a day pottering round the shops or head to Keswick Museum and Art Gallery for some culture, ideal for anyone with an interest in local history. With two marinas in the village, a day on Derwentwater is a must. Hire a kayak, have a windsurfing lesson or jump on the launch for a cruise round the lake. If you prefer to explore on two wheels, be sure to bring your bikes with you (you can store them in the garage). Cycle through the beautiful Newlands Valley to picturesque Buttermere; with either Newlands Pass or Honister Pass to tackle, you'll have earned some homemade cake or ice cream from the cafe when you get to the other side.

In a prime position in the popular Lakeland village of Portinscale and surrounded by breathtaking views, this spacious bungalow has been refurbished throughout. With the accommodation all laid out on one level (please note, there a couple of steps between the living room and sun room, and a couple of steps up into the house), you'll find it easy to feel right at home here.

Through the front door you'll find a cloakroom with hooks for hanging up coats and storing outdoor gear. Off the central hallway, you'll find the spacious dining kitchen. Well equipped with everything you'd need for a self catering holiday there's an electric oven and gas hob, useful microwave and all the crockery and cookware for whipping up a feast. The kitchen also has a small wall mounted TV to keep the cooks entertained. Gather round the dining table, the perfect place for comparing notes on the day's adventures whilst enjoying a hearty home cooked meal. A useful utility area houses the washing machine. There is a small fridge in the kitchen and a fridge/freezer in the garage where the tumble dryer is also located.

Back across the hallway to the living room, a bright but cosy room with fantastic views from its large windows over the garden to the fells beyond. With a three-seater sofa, recliner sofa and a recliner armchair, you can relax in style here; sit back and feel the stresses of everyday life drift away. Curl up with a good book in front of the electric fire or catch up on some TV. Down a step from the living room is the lovely sun room. A great addition to the living space, the sun room is a wonderfully calming room, which houses a sofa bed for a further two guests. Ornithologists will love sitting in here and watching the comings and goings of the many birds who also like to pay the bungalow a visit (or its garden at least!). The large glazed sliding door opens onto a paved area extending the sun room into the garden.

At the back of the bungalow are the two bedrooms. Both bedrooms have fantastic views over the garden to the fells beyond, as well as their own TVs - there'll be no need to fight over the remote here! With a wardrobe and chest of drawers for storage, the twin room is sure to be a hit for children and adults alike. The lovely double bedroom has plenty of handy built in storage and a quirky dressing table completes the room. As well as a window overlooking the garden, there is also a window from the double bedroom to the sun room making it another light and airy space but a convenient blind can be closed for privacy.

The family shower room completes the accommodation on offer. With WC, wash basin and great modern walk-in shower, it's perfect for reinvigorating tired muscles after a day out exploring.

And there is so much exploring to be done, even just in the large garden! The areas of lawn are ideal for children and dogs to play (please note, the garden is not full enclosed and there is a steep slope between the different levels so children and dogs should be supervised at all times), whilst the patio is perfect for that first morning cuppa, lunch al fresco or a refreshing G&T come the evening. With stunning views towards the surrounding fells and even a view of Derwentwater when the leaves are off the trees, one could easily spend the week simply basking in beautiful surroundings.

The house had everything we needed. It was lovely and warm, which was great as the weather was mixed. We loved watching the wildlife on the doorstep. It was useful having access to the garage to store/dry out our pushchair and wetsuit. The road outside the house was much busier than expected and it was a shame that the lake launch no longer stops aRead moret the marina as the jetty is damaged. But overall we had a great stay. It is a nice walk to Keswick along a pushchair friendly track. Hide

Birchfield is a lovely cottage in an excellent location however, the interior let's the property down with damaged equipment, grubby kitchen, poor standards of cleanliness throughout and tired decoration. All being said it was warm and cosy and we enjoyed our time there.

Views superb. Location eccellent. The garden is large but the steps can be slippy in the rain and you may never see your dog again in the dense undergrowth beyound the mown garden. Difficult to pull out onto the road into Portinscale as the view left is quite obscured.
