The house is also very handy for the pub - there are 5 in the valley and the Bower House Inn is just a 10-15 minute walk away. Nearby is the River Esk with natural pools for swimming. It is also a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The river flows all the way down to Ravenglass, a fishing village with an interesting Roman history.
The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea.
The village shop sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh local produce, local ale and wine. Eskdale is a peaceful valley with limited mobile signal however there is an orange mast to boost the network.
