Built in local red Lazonby sandstone, Aster Cottage is located in the picturesque village of Kirkoswald, nine miles from Penrith. This bijou cottage, which sleeps two people and is dog friendly, sits just above the idyllic Raven Beck, which flows into the River Eden. Just a few steps from the cottage, Raven Beck is the perfect place to spend a sunny day relaxing by the water’s edge, as well as providing an ideal route for dog walking. In the winter, curl up in front of the log burning stove with a good book for the ultimate relaxing getaway.
The cottage is located away from the main road, but opposite the local village shop and is less than a minute's walk from two local pubs: The Fetherston Arms (or Fethers, as it’s warmly referred to by the locals) and The Crown. Be sure to book if you want to eat at either, they are popular with visitors and locals alike! There are plenty of scenic walks to the hamlet of Parkhead and along the River Eden, amongst other strolls or hikes.
The peaceful countryside location is in the heart of the Eden Valley yet only a short distance from Penrith, Ullswater and the Lake District. The village’s name is derived from St Oswald’s church, which features a 19th century bell tower that is said to have warned village residents of Scottish invasions. Oswald, whom the church was named after, was the King of Northumbria who, according to legend, toured the pagan North with St Aidan in the 7th century.
