Things to do nearby Artist's Barn

Mungrisdale is a peaceful parish made up of several hamlets. It is one of those perfect locations in the Lake Distric: unspoiled, fairly remote and incredibly tranquil. There are superb walks and a traditional pub.

Ullswater from Arnison Crag

The road into the parish curves round the base of the fells, creating the feeling that you are travelling into an area of peace and seclusion, even though it is actually quite easy to get to, being only 5-10 minutes off the A66. It also gives very easy access to the wilds of Caldbeck, Hesket Newmarket, Ullswater and the Eden Valley.

Blencathra in the Lake District

This quiet corner on the edge of the northern fells offers something for everyone, be it a gentle ramble through the lanes and fields or miles of grassy mountainsides and access to the infamous Sharp Edge on Blencathra. You can walk straight from Mungrisdale into Bannerdale, a serene valley where you can hike for miles without seeing a soul. There are several stunning walks in the valley including the superb ridge to the top of Bannerdale Crags and the gentler ascent of Souther Fell, one of the last Lake District outposts before the land levels out towards the Eden Valley. Legend has it that a spectral army can be seen on certain dates marching along the top of the fell!

Red Squirrel

The Mill Inn is a 17th century coaching inn with a delightful riverside beer garden. A huge millstone is set into the bar as a decorative reminder of the building’s history. The location by the river is serene and restful; the wooded gill is a perfect sanctuary for local wildlife. Red squirrels are a popular sight here and the wild fell ponies are quite simply a delight.

Mungrisdale is popular with cyclists due to the lack of traffic and because Wainwright’s Coast to Coast route passes through. The lanes undulate for miles and are very scenic. Nearby Greystoke has an excellent cyclist’s café with a “quirky workshop” that offers everything from bike stripping and pewter smithing to lampshade making and bush craft!

Ullswater in the Lake District

The closest lake to Mungrisdale is Ullswater, a long ribbon lake with contrasting mountain scenery. Pooley Bridge in the east is surrounded by gentle rolling countryside whilst Glenridding and Patterdale in the west are at the foot of some of the most exciting mountains in the Lake District. Ullswater has a steamer boat that runs to three locations around the lake, perfect for combining a scenic cruise with a walk. The lake is also very popular for all manner of watersports including windsurfing. You can launch your own boat at Howtown or take out temporary membership of Ullswater Yacht Club.

Aira Force at Ullswater

On a rainy day, a visit to Aira Force is an absolute must. The waterfall becomes even more spectacular after a bit of rain, but is also well-worth viewing in all sorts of weather. You can either park up at Aira Force car park or catch one of the steamers to the Aira Force pier. You can then follow the beck up a gentle path to the falls. Once you’ve taken in the cascading water, you can either return the way you came or continue up Gowbarrow for a simple climb rewarded by lovely views of Blencathra and Ullswater.

Keswick in the Lake District

Keswick and Derwentwater are a 15-minute drive away from Mungrisdale. The town is a buzzing location popular with outdoor enthusiasts. There are plenty of shops, cafés and places to eat, as well as things to do. Why not try crazy golf, driving a remote control yacht, or taking in a film or show at the vintage cinema or lakeside theatre?

Sailing on Derwentwater

Derwentwater is a beautiful lake surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. You can hire boats to row out to the islands yousrelf or enjoy a more laid-back ride on the Keswick Launch, which stops at various interesting jetties around the lake. Hop off at Ashness Gate for a walk up to the famous and picturesque Ashness Bridge and onto Surprise View, or alight at Hawes End or Low Brandlehow to start a walk up Catbells, a fairly easy fell wall that offers spectacular views over the lake and town.
