Aikin is a wonderful place, stuffed full of treasures, antiques and knick-knacks, standing proudly in the upper part of the Newlands Valley with beautiful, uninterrupted views of the Newlands valley and fells.
The Newlands Valley is an excellent location for walkers. It offers some of the best ridge walks in the Lake District. Height is gained quickly and there are several outstanding horseshoe walks in the valley including the Dale Head and Coledale horseshoes.
It is also a superb base for cyclists as the Newlands Pass offers several exciting hairpin bends and testing hills. It forms a circuit with the Whinlatter Pass or a longer circuit with Honister Pass providing thrilling road cycling and magnificent scenery.
The Swinside Inn is the only pub in the valley. It is a traditional pub serving good food and beer. The outside bar allows you to admire the view whilst supping a pint. There are also pubs in the villages of Braithwaite (3.5 miles) and Buttermere.(3 miles). Keswick is a short drive away (5 miles) boasting plenty of pubs, shops, cafes and restaurants. Keswick also has an Art Deco Cinema and a theatre.
