- We had a lovely stay at 4 Raven Lane in June 2021. The cottage has a good layout which suited us with three bedrooms, incredible views from the front of the house that I would never get tired of looking at and a good sized outside space with plenty of grass for the kids to run around in or us to sit out on.
The house was quite dated in some parts, particularly the kitchen and the bathroom, which could do with refurbing but were adequate for our needs. No wifi and storage heaters/oil radiators only for heat including a bar heater in the bathroom that I hadn't seen since visiting my grandparent's house more than 35 years ago! We knew that was the case going in and I would say is reflected in the price paid for the property which is reasonable for the area it is located in. When we stayed there the weather was exceptionally good and so the heating didn't bother us. I don't know how it would have been in colder weather though, for example the single room didn't even have an oil radiator or storage heater.
Having said all that the property suited us (2 adults and 2 young kids) very well. It's only a mile and a half into Keswick but you are definitely out in the country with a field of cows and sheep in front of the property which is lovely to wake up to in the morning. Applethwaite is a nice little village. It doesn't have anything in the way of pubs or shops - when we went there was an honesty box arrangement in the centre of the village where you could get milk, eggs, orange juice, butter and a few other things - but that meant it was lovely, quiet village. It's in an exceptional location for exploring the area. Only a mile or so to Latrigg, Keswick not far at all, Skiddaw behind you and Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite Lake not far either as is the Whinlatter forest. Plenty of walks for all ages and fitness levels very close by if not right out of the door.
Last thing to say is that the elderly owners live next and we had some lovely interactions with them. Thanks, Reg and Dot!
