Stylish and inviting, enjoy quality time with friends and family including your dog at this gorgeous, spacious cottage.

Tucked away in the hidden parish of Haverthwaite, this is the perfect place for a tranquil retreat in the south of the Lake District National Park. This characterful property has been lovingly designed to provide comfort, style and a sense of homeliness. With stone floors and exposed beams, the cottage tells a story of its past; two wood burners provide a cosy, warm atmosphere; and beautiful prints and modern furnishings create a lovely place to spend some time.

Haverthwaite is home to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway where you can hop aboard their steam engine for a journey back in time. You'll also find family favourites such as the Lakeland Motor Museum and the Lakes Aquarium just a short distance away. Nearby, Newby Bridge marks the foot of Windermere, which offers fun for all, whether it's walking its shores, hopping on and off a steamer with Windermere Lake Cruises or trying one of the many water sports on offer. Less than a mile from Orchard Cottages is the welcoming Anglers Arms, an excellent choice whether you're after a quick drink and snack or a celebratory meal.

The cottage couldn't be better located for exploring the dramatic scenery of the Lake District National Park, the popular towns and villages of South Lakeland, or the quieter, less discovered valleys and coastline of the Furness Peninsular, and it's easily accessible being less than a 20-minute drive from the M6.

This is the end property in a terrace of three delightful slate-built cottages converted from stables and loose boxes. Two parking spaces are available making unloading on arrival a breeze. Down a few steps, the quaint courtyard garden offers an idyllic place to sit and enjoy a meal in the summer months and benefits from beautiful cottage planting. The glass front door and adjacent French doors allow natural light into the open plan ground floor. When entering the property, a small foyer area has plenty of space for storing outdoor gear before opening out into the main living space. Stylish sofas and modern furnishings set around a log burning stove create a cosy place to relax, and the TV, music system and bookshelves stacked with novels, guidebooks and maps, ensure there is no opportunity to get bored. A floor length window provides light, while a period wooden shutter offers privacy when needed.

The heated slate floor links the sitting room with the dining area, which has seating for six set around a large table overlooking the garden. The French doors connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, making al fresco dining on a pleasant evening a relaxed affair. Beyond the dining area, you'll find a delightful galley kitchen which, despite its modest size, is well-equipped with a full-size fridge and separate freezer, microwave oven, free-standing range cooker with electric double oven and grill and gas hobs. The kitchen has plenty of storage and modern facilities. The period furnishings, small seating area and oak worktops make this charming kitchen a delightful space to enjoy cooking. And with plenty of cookbooks lining the shelves, you will find plenty of inspiration.

A flight of stairs from the small sitting area lead to a fabulous and somewhat surprising room. A pitched roof, exposed beams and slate floor give it character. Bold artwork and ornaments provide a sense of style and the large comfortable corner sofa and log burning stove make it an excellent choice for chilling out. The room is flooded with natural daylight and French doors open onto a secret courtyard garden where a fire pit and seating area await.

Back to the main ground floor living space, a staircase leads up to the sleeping accommodation. All bedrooms overlook the front garden; they have each been lovingly decorated with contemporary touches and offer comfort for guests. The first floor has a lovely warm presence, with exposed oak floorboards and modern panel doors throughout. The landing is well-lit from the high ceiling and skylight above, and the glass balustrade and white walls continue the light and airy feel. The master bedroom boasts a dramatic feature wallpaper and matching soft furnishings, and individual pieces of furniture complete the relaxed yet opulent look. A small, walk-in wardrobe provides superb storage, and the adjacent en-suite is a bright, attractive room with a walk-in overhead rainwater shower.

Adjacent to the master bedroom, at the top of the staircase, is a cosy single room. Double sliding doors and a full wall of built-in wardrobe cupboards make clever use of the space. Simplistic decor but with a bold rug and modern artwork to give it personality. A twin room completes the first-floor accommodation and is ideal for children and adults alike. A small built-in wardrobe and shelving provide storage, and a traditional rug and furnishings create a homely feel.

Opposite the twin bedroom, the family bathroom is a decent size and comprises of a bath with rainwater shower over, recessed basin and toilet. It benefits from lots of natural light and a large mirrored wall. An oak worktop and shelving give plenty of storage space for toiletries.

We loved staying in this clean and comfortable cottage. We spent a few days exploring Coniston Water and had a lovely walk up to Beacon Tarn and Beacon Hill - amazing views! It felt like home from home.

Absolutely loved our week here! The cottage was clean and very spacious for the four of us and a dog. The location is ideal for exploring the south lakes and Windermere as we did every day. As mentioned in other reviews the upper floor does creak an awful lot but nothing you can't live with. Plenty of walks near by and a local with good food withinRead more walking distance. Already looking to book again for next year. Loved it and can't wait to return. Hide

Lovely little cottage! We had a great time. Only thing was we found the directions confusing- take the second turning to Haverthwaite not the first! We arrived late in the pitch black and couldnt find it. Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay - very cosy, very unique layout which has been well designed, and well equipped.

Lovely layout. Heating could be better. Upstairs floorboards need sorting, extremely noisy. Next doors dog continually barked which could be quite loud. No lights on the road, so no dog walking after dark. Positives. Great layout. Someovely dog walks along the river or up into the hills through the woods.

Really enjoyed our stay, lovely quiet location close to Lake areas. Front garden needs some attention, although its a cottage garden it requires a good tidy up, many weeds and flags need re-pointing. Floor boards incredibly noisy upstairs.

Great location. You can hear all sound from next door so if youre a light sleeper the double room that adjoins next door isnt recommended. Also the upstairs floorboards are very creaky, so we had to avoid walking on them while kids asleep. The cottage is quaint and beautiful inside, also well equipped. This was our 3rd stay at 3 Orchard Cottages in the last 2 years. It is conveniently located for us and has the right layout and bedrooms for our family. We know the area well, having previously lived nearby and now only 45 minute drive from home, so regard our stay here as a rest and recuperation week. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable.
