Wood Barn

Description

General Introduction

Wood Barn holiday cottage is a barn conversion that offers very comfortable accommodation for couples or groups of up to 4 people in Upper Eskdale, one of the most tranquil valleys of the Lake District.

Nestled on the side of a fell, it is ideally placed for walking, with hundreds of walks straight from its front door, either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass, an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house. The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The famous Ravenglass and Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea.

There are five pubs in the valley, all welcoming children and serving real ales and a wide choice of good food. Three of them are within walking distance of the holiday cottage; the Woolpack Inn is 10 minutes walk in one direction, and the Brook House Inn and the Boot Inn are 15 minutes walk in the opposite direction.

The village shop, two miles away, sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers. There is some reception for mobile phones on the Orange network and the cottage has a payphone.
