General Introduction
Set in the beautiful surroundings of Upper Eskdale, one of the most tranquil valleys in the Lake District, this cosy holiday cottage provides ideal self catering accommodation for couples and walkers.
On a working farm, with 800 Herdwick sheep, there are hundreds of walks right from its front door. Pets are welcome and riders who would like to bring their horse to explore the countryside can house their horse on the farm itself. Walkers can choose between gentle strolls along the River Esk, more challenging climbs up Scafell (the highest mountain in England) and Harter Fell, or hikes over to Wasdale, which houses Wastwater, England’s deepest lake. The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing.
The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea. There are five pubs in Eskdale – the Woolpack Inn is a 15 minute walk, the Boot Inn and The Brook House Inn are slightly further but worthy of a visit. All serve real ales and a wide choice of good food.
Eskdale village shop, sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers. A public payphone is located 30 yards away, and there is some reception for mobile phones on the Orange network.
