Ullswater Outdoor Festival 2011

Ullswater is holding its annual Outdoor Festival from Sat 24 September through to Sun 2 October.  The launch is held at Glenridding at the top end of Ullswater which is handy for anyone staying in our Ullswater Cottages, and is just half an hour for anyone staying in our Keswick cottages.

Taffy Thomas (Lake District Storytelling Legend)
Taffy Thomas (Lake District story telling legend)

The launch at Glenridding will include Taffy Thomas (a local Lake District legend) telling his stories to people of all ages, children’s entertainment with Laura J, and displays from the Lake District Bird of Prey Centre.  There will be various arts & crafts activities and a small farmers’ market.  The Lake District Mountain Rescue will be there to answer any questions you may have and there will also be a fire engine on display.

Ullswater, the Lake District

The week will consist of various activities from guided walks to learning basic map and compass skills to kayaking, canoeing and dingy sailing to a variety of scrambles up the fells to illustrated talks.  Most of the activities are free and the Ullswater valley is a beautiful one – breathtaking and not too busy despite the fact that Ullswater is the nearest lake in the Lake District to the M6 (just a ten minute drive).

Guided walks include a walk to Red Tarn (below Helvellyn), High Hartsop Dodd, Place Fell (via Fusedale, Martindale and Boredale), Maiden Castle Settlement (via Dalemain), Deepdale Valley, Aira Force, Glencoyne, the Fusedale Valley at Ullswater, Hallin Fell circuit, Kirkstone, and a trip to Greenside and Keppel Cove (to view the remains of Greenside mining activities).  Most of the walks take around 6 hours so bring a packed lunch!  Well behaved dogs are welcome on many of the walks.

Please call Ullswater Tourist Information Centre on 017684 82414 to book or find out further information.  This will be a well worthwhile event if you have booked to stay in one of our Lake District Cottages at the end of September this year.
