Swinsty

Description

General Introduction

If you are looking for the perfect holiday house to let in England’s Lake District then Swinsty provides an exceptionally well-appointed solution. Sleeping 8/9, Swinsty is ideally situated both as a tranquil haven for walking and relaxing locally and as a base to explore all the attractions the Lakes has to offer.

Originally built in 1679, the house has been recently renovated and refurbished to provide high quality holiday accommodation. The traditional, original Lakeland stone of the exterior is complemented by rooms finished in contemporary comfort and design style.

Located in the breathtaking landscape of unspoilt Martindale, Swinsty is situated in rolling valley farmland with its own walled garden and enclosed parking. It has a lovely terrace for eating out and drinking in the magnificent views. A Lakeland beck trickles past its driveway. The owner's family have been associated with the area for over 80 years.

Magnificent Lake Ullswater is just 1 mile away: second largest of the lakes, and many think the loveliest. There you can swim, picnic , walk or sail on Ullswater's steamer boat.

Challenging or more leisurely walks are on the doorstep. This is walkers' paradise.  And as you would expect from truly unspoilt countryside there is interesting wildlife to be seen, including red squirrels, badgers, red deer, owls, herons, kestrels, buzzards, and, if you are really lucky, golden eagle.

Swinsty is situated at the end of a long no through road from Pooley Bridge that skirts the south side of Ullswater. So there is absolutely no traffic and it remains quiet even in high summer.  Yet access is easy with Penrith and the M6 just 30 minutes away by car and the nearby small village of Pooley Bridge is just 15 minutes drive.

Things To Do

Swinsty: The Surrounding Area

Swinsty offers substantial holiday accommodation. It's ideal for families or groups of friends wanting to enjoy the Lakes.

There are many days of varied walking straight from the doorstep, both high and low level: in the valley bottoms, beside the lake, on the fells, including many less frequented routes away from the hordes.

Ullswater is close by: ideal to picnic beside, swim in, fish in, and boat and windsurf on. You can launch your own boat at Howtown, only 5 minutes drive away, or take out temporary membership of Ullswater Yacht Club, just 10 minutes away. Boats can be hired at Pooley Bridge and Glenridding. Lake steamers run between Pooley Bridge, Howtown and Glenridding throughout the year (with a reduced winter service) – good to combine with a walk.

Swinsty is ideally positioned to provide easy car access to all the other fells and lakes of the area, as well as country houses, Hadrian’s Wall, and many visitor attractions including the houses of Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth, watermills, potteries, alpaca and ostrich farms, and much, much more.

Places to Eat

Howtown Hotel (March to October; very good value), 5 minutes by car; Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel (all year round; expensive), 10 minutes; three pubs at Pooley Bridge, 15 minutes; other village pubs; various restaurants in Penrith, 25 minutes.
