ROUTEN HOUSE
This Victorian country farmhouse offers gracious self-catering holiday accommodation for up to 12 people. Standing on the edge of Ennerdale Water, one of the most tranquil and secluded lakes in the Lake District, the house has 4 acres of land, with pastures stretching all the way down to the lake, panoramic views of the high fells and a crystal clear stream that comes all the way down from the mountains.

William Wordsworth, who lived in nearby Cockermouth was moved to write:
“I lingered here contented
Nor rose up until the sun had almost touched the horizon
It was a splendid evening
And my soul did once again make trial of the strength restored to it afresh."
The unspoiled and peaceful valley of Ennerdale is an ideal starting point for hundreds of walks - from gentle lakeside strolls to energetic mountain hikes with stunning views of Ennerdale and Buttermere lakes; rock climbing (including the challenging Pillar Rock), mountain biking in Ennerdale forest, fishing, pony trekking and paragliding. The nearest village, Ennerdale Bridge, has a church and two pubs, both serving good food and real ales.
The market towns of Cockermouth and Whitehaven are only a short distance away and the ever-popular Keswick is only half an hour's drive.
The historic village of St Bees is also close at hand, with a long pebble and sand beach, its famous cliffs with thousands of nesting sea birds and a 12th century Benedictine priory.
