Penny Hill Farm Cottage
Description
General Introduction
Once owned by Beatrix Potter, Penny Hill Farm holiday Cottage is reached via Doctor Bridge, one of the prettiest spots on the River Esk. The farm is now owned by the National Trust and for the past 30 years has been run by Ralph and Margaret Jackson. Still a working farm, their main business is Herdwick sheep. In addition to this pretty holiday cottage, which opens out onto the farmyard, they also run Bed and Breakfast from the farmhouse. The holiday cottage offers self catering accommodation for 4 persons and has spectacular views of Harter Fell and the other hills of the beautiful and tranquil Eskdale valley. It is the perfect place for walkers, with a wide range of walks from its front door, from gentle strolls along the river or more challenging climbs up the fells. The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea. There are five pubs in Eskdale, all welcoming children and serving real ales and a wide choice of good food. The nearest pub to Penny Hill is the Woolpack Inn, a 10 minute walk away. Boot village with its small shop, the Boot Inn and the Brook House Inn is around a half hour walk. Eskdale village shop, Eskdale Stores, a ten minute drive away, sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, alcohol and newspapers.
