General Introduction
Situated in the village of Papcastle, Garden View Holiday Cottage , offering self catering accommodation is ideally located for exploring the Lake District with the convenience of all the facilities that the nearby town of Cockermouth has to offer. The Belle Vue pub in Papcastle is within walking distance of the cottage and serves real ale (Jennings) and excellent homecooked bar meals.
Cockermouth town is a small lively market town with a good choice of public houses, restaurants, shops and a supermarket. Many of the businesses have been fully renovated after the floods of 2009, having smart new fittings and decor.
Cockermouth was the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth, his childhood home now owned by The National Trust and open to the public. Cockermouth Castle is worth a visit and a stroll along the riverbank is a delight. Loweswater, a lovely tranquil valley is a short drive away as are the valleys and lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water.
Skiddaw, The Lake District's fourth highest mountain, is just 20 minutes drive from Cockermouth as is the bustling market town of Keswick with it's many outdoor shops and attractions.
