| TENTERFIELD COTTAGE:
THINGS TO DO
Local places of interest:
Swinside Stone Circle: There is still some discussion
as to why the stone circle was built, many believe it was a meeting
point, others believe it was used as a market place used for the
slave trade. Whatever it's purpose it is certainally worth a visit.
(5 min drive or 30 min walk from Tenterfield)

The hamlet of Hallthwaites is situated to the south westerly side
of Blackcombe. The spire of St Anne's Church is visable in the foreground,
marking the most northerly edge of Hallthwaites.
Blackcombe, one of my favourite walks, especially
on a clear day when you can see Scotland, Wales, The Isle of Man,
The Pennines and many of the lakeland's fells/mountains all from
one view point! (5min drive away or for a longer walk it is
possible to walk from Tenterfield)
Duddon Iron Furnace: Situated next to the river
Duddon on the road to Corney fell. This old Iron furnace was used
when the Duddon Valley had a thriving mining industry, the building
is well maintained by the National Park authority, with easy access
from the main road. (5 min drive or 1 hour walk from Tenterfield).

Silecroft Beach: a spectacular expance of sandy
and shingle beach, plenty of car parking space and public amenities
near by.When the tide is out there is plenty of sand to enjoy, and
when the tide turns it will happily lap at the shingle bank. The
cliffs of Gutterby can be seen in the distance, making for a very
enjoyable evening stroll, especially when timed right the sunset
is magnificent! In the evenings Silecroft beach is very popular
with local fishermen (depending on tide times etc) catching Mackerel,
Codling and Bass. (15min drive from Tenterfield).
Duddon Estuary: The river Duddon flows into the
Estuary about a 20 min walk away from Tenterfield. The estuary is
very popular with bird watchers looking for many species of wading
bird, also mullet can be seen feeding near the surface of the brackesh
water where the river and sea meet.

Ulpha Bridge: The river Duddon and its surrounding
valley is well known by Wordsworth fans and also by family groups
who come here to enjoy the crystal clear waters. Ulpha bridge is
a mecca for the thrill seeking swimmers who enjoy juming into the
deep pool below the bridge!
