An easy walk around Buttermere

Kate A 11 February 2021

Here at Sally's Lake District Cottages, we just love Buttermere! This pretty hamlet is simply beautiful, and one of our favourite walks is around Buttermere lake. This iconic lake is really popular but remarkably is never overcrowded and maintains its peaceful atmosphere. Walking around the lake is very easy and we'll describe our favourite circuit here.

The walk

If you're visiting by car, park up in Buttermere Village at the pay and display car park and walk past the Fish Inn to start this walk.

This circular walk in Buttermere is 4.5 miles long and perfect for those looking for an easier stroll and time to take in the surrounding landscape, nature and wildlife.

Buttermere lake

At the southern tip of Buttermere, you can see The Sentinels, one of the most photographed spots in the country and it's not hard to see why.

The walking route around the lake follows a clear path and on the far side of the lake, the path is perfect for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Both paths wind in and out of stunning woodland whilst on the road side of the lake there is only a very small section of road walking, the rest is easily avoided.

A post-walk treat

Why not round off your walk with a refreshing drink or bite to eat at one of the traditional pubs in Buttermere Village? We recommend The Bridge Hotel (which has a pet-friendly bar) and The Fish Inn.
